The Department consists of six faculty members and about 60 majors. We encourage students to conduct Honors and other research projects. Two staff members provide technical support for teaching and student research. Facilities and equipment include surveying and GPS equipment, a JEOL 5600LV scanning electron microscope with an Oxford EDS analyzer, petrographic microscopes, rock preparation facilities, a Pulse EKKO ground penetrating radar unit, and a Canberra broad energy germanium detector.
Instrumentation for spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction are available elsewhere on campus. Oberlin is a member of the Keck Geology Consortium, and the College has competitions for small research grants each semester. The incumbent will teach the equivalent of five courses in the general area of tectonics with preference for specialization in tectonics, structural geology, or a related field. Among the qualifications required for appoint is the Ph.D degree (in hand or expected by first semester of academic 2016-2017. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.
