Minimum Criteria:
PhD required (by September 1, 2016)
Specialization in environmental geology – ability to teach Hydrogeology and contribute to field trip course.
Teaching experience (at least as Teaching Assistant)
Demonstration of excellence preferred
Evidence of successful research program
Potential for successful research involving undergraduates in field-based research and is appropriate for institution such as PLU
Evidence of commitment to undergraduate education in liberal arts context and interest in participation/collaboration outside Geosciences (Gen Ed, IHON…)

Assistant Professor of Geosciences – Environmental Geology
The Department of Geosciences at Pacific Lutheran University invites applications for a tenure-track position in environmental geology at the level of Assistant Professor to teach beginning September 1, 2016. Applications are welcomed from candidates with research and teaching interest over a wide spectrum of environmental geology who can teach hydrogeology, develop a field-oriented research program, are interested in involving undergraduate students in research, and are willing and able to contribute to our departmental field trip course.   Areas of expertise that complement the areas of expertise of the current faculty are of particular interest.  Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research and cultivation of new collaborations will be an asset in the position. We are seeking a person with a commitment to excellence in teaching at a predominately undergraduate institution, collegiality and flexibility to meet the needs of our students and the program, and a dedication to establishing a field-based research program that engages students. Participation in extended field trip experiences, the general education program, and mentoring senior capstone research projects is also expected.  Ph.D.in Geology or closely related field is required. ABD will be considered, but Ph.D. must be in hand by September 1, 2016.


Pacific Lutheran University is a comprehensive university with a College of Arts & Sciences and four professional schools. Total enrollment is about 3500 students.  Located in a uniquely scenic region of the Pacific Northwest, the university’s campus is 40 miles south of Seattle and 40 miles west of Mt Rainier near Tacoma, Washington.  PLU has an on-campus site for conducting aquifer tests and a nearby off-campus site with six observation wells and a stream, which provides the opportunity to study groundwater/surface water interaction.
