The NSF is seeking candidate(s) for a Program Director within the Education and Diversity Program, Directorate for Geosciences (GEO), Arlington VA.  The Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) recognizes that active support of geoscience education and workforce development must be a significant element of GEO's mission to promote the overall health of the enterprise. This commitment extends beyond GEO’s traditional support for graduate student training and includes support for activities that advance geoscience education reform at the undergraduate and pre-college levels and improve public understanding of the geosciences and its contributions. Included in these activities are focused efforts to broaden participation of underrepresented groups in the geosciences.

The Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) supports activities designed to improve the education and human resource base in research areas that advance the state of knowledge about Earth and the processes that modify them. The Program Director for Education and Diversity coordinates and leads Directorate-wide activities focused on increasing representation within the geosciences community and expanding and enriching geosciences education at all levels.  The Program Director chairs the GEO Education Team and participates with the GEO leadership team in developing education and diversity strategies and recommending assessment and budgets for GEO education programs.  He/she evaluates proposals and prepares recommendations for awards and declinations.  The Program Director acts as liaison to internal NSF groups and programs with similar interests and accurately reflects NSF policy and procedures to the public, the scientific community, and external organizations, including other Federal agencies. He/she also interacts with the university community and is aware of the challenges and opportunities that are important considerations for developing a GEO education strategy.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a Geosciences field plus, after award of the Ph.D., six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position. Experience pertinent to the position includes activities that demonstrate proficiency in a disciplinary area of the geosciences plus geoscience education theory, practice, assessment, research on learning and/or leading substantial education or outreach projects; and being recognized in the community as a leader in this area.

Furman University: Assistant Professor, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Job Description Summary:
The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Furman University, a highly selective private liberal arts undergraduate institution, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level beginning in August 2016.


The ideal candidate will have demonstrated teaching and research experience in Earth Systems Science with expertise in energy resources/structural geology/tectonics. Teaching responsibilities consist of four courses with labs per year, and include a combination of an introductory level earth systems science course and upper level courses in energy resources, structural geology and plate tectonics. Salem State University - Faculty, Geological Sciences, Full-time, Tenure-Track, Fall 2016

The geological sciences department at Salem State University seeks applicants for a tenure track position beginning September 2016.  The ideal candidate is a field geologist with expertise in structural geology and a secondary focus on igneous and metamorphic petrology who is committed to undergraduate teaching and research. Teaching assignments will include: Structural Geology for majors, summer field course in Montana, introductory general education courses in the geosciences and serving as senior thesis advisor.

Candidates are required to perform duties in accordance with the MSCA contract.  Duties include teaching responsibilities, advising, scholarship and contributions to the development of the department and university.  The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester.  The position is subject to available funding.

Required qualifications:
1. PhD or ABD in the geological sciences; and if ABD, will have doctorate by June 30, 2016
2. Expertise in field geology and bedrock mapping
3. Expertise in Structural Geology
4. Teaching experience (may include part time, and post doc teaching experience)

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Ability to teach igneous/metamorphic petrology
2. Desire and ability to develop an externally funded, undergraduate-friendly research program
3. Experience with and passion for teaching undergraduate students
4. Experience with undergraduate research
5. Record of scholarly research in the geological sciences
6. Experience and/or interest in New England geology

Middlebury - Tenure-Track (Assistant Professor)

Pacific Southwest Research Station - Hydrologic Technician

The USDA Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Research Station (PSW), is advertising for a Hydrologic Technician in support of research at the Caspar Creek Experimental Watersheds.

 

This position will mostly involve field work in the Caspar Creek Experimental Watersheds, located on Jackson Demonstration State Forest in Mendocino County, CA.  Approximately 20% of the work will be lab- or office-based in Fort Bragg, CA.  Primary duties include collecting hydrology and sediment data, surveying landscape conditions, and evaluating erosion sources in a forested watershed.  The Caspar Creek Experimental Watersheds are a cooperative research project of the Pacific Southwest Research Station and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The hiree will be working under the supervision of a hydrologist.  Experience with hydrologic instrumentation, data loggers, and electronic survey equipment is essential. The ability to hike over steep, uneven terrain and to carry 40 lbs is required, as are a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.  Experience with GIS and DC electronics is desired.

 

Salary will be based on the applicant’s completed years of college and/or experience.  This is a federal government position and only U.S. citizens qualify. 

 

The position will be located at the Pacific Southwest Research Station office in Fort Bragg, CA. Fort Bragg is located along the northern California coast about midway between San Francisco and the Oregon border.  Historically a lumber and fishing town, Fort Bragg has become economically more dependent on tourism.  Fort Bragg provides services for the coastal population of about 25,000, and hosts a hospital, public schools for K-12, a community college campus, and a variety of shopping facilities.  Housing rentals typically range from $1000-$2000 per month.  Barracks are also available.

Associate Research Scientist Position in Aerosols and Climate, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for an Associate Research Scientist position in the Atmospheric Chemistry research group of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University in Palisades, NY.   The successful candidate will conduct simulations in a chemistry-climate model to investigate the impacts of regional aerosol emissions on climate.  The project is a collaborative research effort involving three U.S. chemistry-climate models and will examine regional climate variability and the detection of regional climate responses to aerosol forcing.

 

Candidates should have completed their PhD and at least one year of postdoctoral research by April 2015, in atmospheric science or a related field.  Experience designing, executing, and analyzing simulations in the NOAA GFDL CM3 chemistry-climate strongly preferred.  The successful candidate will also have experience evaluating models with aerosol observations, either in situ or remotely sensed.  Prior experience with analyzing regional climate responses is a plus. A record of publications in scientific literature required.  

 

Appointment will be for 1-year, with continuation pending funding and progress.
