The USDA Forest Service,
Pacific Southwest Research Station (PSW), is advertising for a Hydrologic Technician in support of
research at the Caspar Creek Experimental Watersheds.
This position will mostly
involve field work in the Caspar Creek Experimental Watersheds, located on
Jackson Demonstration State Forest in Mendocino County, CA. Approximately 20% of the work will be lab- or
office-based in Fort Bragg, CA. Primary
duties include collecting hydrology and sediment data, surveying landscape
conditions, and evaluating erosion sources in a forested watershed. The Caspar Creek Experimental Watersheds are
a cooperative research project of the Pacific Southwest Research Station and
the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Research at the site
focuses on measurement and evaluation of the effects of forest management
activities on watershed processes.

The hiree will be working under
the supervision of a hydrologist.
Experience with hydrologic instrumentation, data loggers, and electronic
survey equipment is essential. The ability to hike over steep, uneven terrain
and to carry 40 lbs is required, as are a valid driver’s license and a good
driving record. Experience with GIS and
DC electronics is desired.
Salary will be based on the
applicant’s completed years of college and/or experience. This is a federal government position and
only U.S. citizens qualify.
The position will be located at the Pacific
Southwest Research Station office in Fort Bragg, CA. Fort Bragg is located along the
northern California coast about midway between San Francisco and the Oregon
border. Historically a lumber and
fishing town, Fort Bragg has become economically more dependent on
tourism. Fort Bragg provides services
for the coastal population of about 25,000, and hosts a hospital, public
schools for K-12, a community
college campus, and a variety
of shopping facilities. Housing rentals typically range from
$1000-$2000 per month. Barracks are also
available.
