Description: The Dyhrman Microbial Oceanography Group at
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University seeks one or more
Postdoctoral Research Scientists to join the laboratory for research broadly
focused on marine microbiology. Possible
research focus areas include but are not limited to 1) Characterizing the
mechanistic underpinnings of resource metabolism in eukaryotic phytoplankton
and using that information to define the role of these organisms play in shaping
ecosystem dynamics and biogeochemical consequences in oligotrophic gyres; and
2) Identifying the role of ocean acidification and other stressors on the
physiology of cyanobacteria and eukaryotic phytoplankton to better predict the
population structure and physiological ecology of target functional groups in
the future oceans. Tools and approaches for this work include molecular,
physiological and chemical measurements, with an emphasis on next-generation
sequencing technology and analyses. The position may necessitate time at sea on
research cruises and will additionally entail laboratory experiments, and data
analysis (including bioinformatics tools).

is located near the NYC metro area, offering many opportunities for

Qualifications: A PhD is required microbiology, biological
oceanography or a related field. Candidates should have experience in
microbiology, and/or biological oceanography, and computational
biology/bioinformatics. Familiarity with the analysis of high throughput
sequencing data including strong programming skills (e.g., R, Python, etc.) is
preferred. Applicants must also have an excellent command (verbal and
written) of the English language, possess strong interpersonal skills, and be
eager to join a vibrant team of scientists using cutting-edge approaches to
understand marine microbial oceanography.
The
start date for this position is flexible. The position is a full-time 1-year
appointment with a competitive salary and benefits package, and the opportunity
of renewal contingent on progress and funding.
